Uproar as coach Butler shoves captain Afeida into the SAFF U20 squad

Bangladesh women's football coach Peter Butler faces criticism over his decision to use senior team captain Afeida Khandaker in the under-20 championship. Critics argue that including established players undermines the development purpose of youth tournaments. Butler fired back by saying Khandaker meets age requirements and wanted to participate herself. The coach stressed that development matters more than winning trophies at youth level. He pointed out that 55 percent of his senior national team consists of under-20 players.

Butler defended his selection choices by explaining that tournament rules prevent him from promoting talented under-17 players to under-20 level. The experienced coach said he would love to include younger stars like Prity and Yearzan but regulations block such moves. He emphasized that international matches remain rare for Bangladesh players and the tournament provides valuable experience. Butler promised to manage playing time carefully to avoid player burnout. The coach insisted that seeing established players inspires younger teammates to reach similar heights.

The football boss called for immediate creation of a domestic women's league with at least six teams. Butler warned that Bangladesh risks losing talented players without proper competitive structures. He argued that the country needs regular tournaments to develop its pipeline of young female footballers. The coach spent early morning training sessions working with over 30 under-17 players in harsh weather conditions. Butler maintains his focus on long-term player development rather than short-term tournament victories.
