Vera Idiareh spots danger before it strikes, markets included

A safety pro is pushing companies to spot problems before they blow up. Vera Oghenefejiro Idiareh is promoting a predictive safety framework across Nigerian workplaces, moving the focus from reaction to early warning signs. Her methods have been applied in industrial settings like the ChivitaHollandia plant, overseeing safety for a thousand workers on dozens of production lines. The approach led to a year with no lost-time injuries and a major drop in recordable incidents. She has also adapted this model for informal sectors, conducting training at Adatan Market in Abeokuta, which improved trader safety knowledge significantly.

Idiareh's technical credentials include eligibility for the U.S. BCSP Certified Safety Professional certification, candidacy for the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma, and ISO 45001 Lead Auditor status. She holds a degree in Technical Education. Financially, she demonstrated cost-effectiveness by managing a large environmental health and safety budget at KarbakVentures, achieving substantial savings through strategic risk prioritization. She argues that predictive principles apply anywhere people work, from factory floors to community markets, aiming to build a habit of identifying risks early to prevent accidents before they happen.
