Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns citing health, Modi sends wishes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended health wishes to former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar after his resignation from office. Dhankhar stepped down from his position as India's fourteenth Vice President on July 21 during the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session. The resignation letter cited medical concerns as the primary reason for leaving office. Opposition parties have raised questions regarding the timing of his sudden departure. Modi acknowledged Dhankhar's service contributions across various government roles through social media.

Dhankhar secured the Vice Presidential position in August 2022 following his nomination by the National Democratic Alliance. He defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva with 528 votes from 710 valid ballots cast. This victory margin of 74.37 percent represented the highest since 1992. His dual role encompassed serving as Rajya Sabha Chairman while maintaining Vice Presidential duties. Multiple hospitalizations occurred during recent months before his resignation.

The constitutional process for selecting a replacement Vice President will commence following established procedures. Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution provided the legal framework for his resignation submission to President Droupadi Murmu.
