Victims Centre Vows Justice for Abused Voices

Mohammed Sandeng is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors at the Victims Centre in The Gambia. He says the center wants justice for victims of human rights abuses and ensures their stories are heard.

Mr. Sandeng spoke at a meeting with lawmakers on Saturday. He said it was an important day for discussing human rights. The Victims Centre helps the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC). It records what happened to victims and helps them share their stories with the TRRC and the public.

The center pushes for the government to help victims. Mr. Sandeng said victims want money for what they went through. The center gets many complaints about this.

Madi Ceesay is a lawmaker who works on human rights issues. He is worried because the government is moving slowly to help victims. He said it's because there aren't good laws yet.

Mr. Ceesay said the government and Parliament are working to fix this. They have made some new laws. These will help punish people who tortured others.

Kebba Jome works at the Victims Centre. He said the center was started in 2017. It happened after the country got a new government. Many victims felt no one was listening to them. The center gives them a place to speak up.

A small staff and a board run the Victims Centre. It works to bring truth, justice, and help to victims. The center keeps a list of human rights abuses. It teaches victims about their rights and helps them get medical care and counseling.

Mr. Jome said 1,270 victims have signed up with the center so far, and more will continue to do so. The center helped pick people to run the TRRC and assisted with making rules about money for victims.
