VP Chiwenga pledges focus on water for Mat South growth

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga promised government action to expand water infrastructure in Matabeleland South Province after completing a three-day assessment of development initiatives on Friday. He addressed residents at Garanyemba Drought Mitigation Centre in Gwanda South district, emphasizing water scarcity as the primary obstacle to agricultural expansion despite favorable soil and climate conditions.

Officials plan to prioritize the construction of the Tuli Manyange Dam, which will irrigate 1,600 hectares and supply Gwanda Town plus the Gwanda Lithium Mine. The 35 million cubic meter reservoir will support multiple irrigation schemes across the province. Chiwenga toured mining operations, agricultural sites, and infrastructure projects in Mangwe, Beitbridge, and Gwanda since Wednesday.

The vice president inspected operations at Gwanda Lithium Mine and visited stalled dam construction, while engaging community members. He praised farmers for adopting village business models that transform idle land into productive enterprises. Authorities will provide cattle fattening equipment to enhance Garanyemba centre operations as part of rural industrialization efforts.
