Wa business school ditches old name, eyes global appeal

Another Ghanaian university is getting a name change after parliament passed a bill. The Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies is dropping the historical figure's name. It will now just be called the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, or UBIDS, located in Wa, up in the Upper West Region.

The government's reasoning is all about branding and perception. They think the shorter, more generic name will make the place more attractive. The idea is to pull in more students, secure better funding, and get alumni and international partners more interested. Officials believe this renames positions the school better on a global scale, helping it compete for foreign students and academic collaborations.

This institution in Wa has been a major player in education in northern Ghana. Now that parliament has signed off, the final step is for the president to give his assent. Once that happens, every piece of official paperwork, all the signs, and the school's branding will switch over to the new UBIDS name.
