WAANSA-Ghana demands urgent action on gun control bill

A civil society organization focused on firearms control is urging authorities to fast-track approval of legislation aimed at regulating small arms, warning that current laws remain insufficient for addressing modern weapons challenges.

Ken Kinney, who leads the West Africa Action Network on Small Arms and Light Weapons Ghana chapter, told reporters that existing regulations governing firearm acquisition and use have grown obsolete. The proposed National Small Arms Bill currently sits with the Interior Ministry, and Kinney emphasized that passing this legislation would represent a significant accomplishment for President John Dramani Mahama's administration. The measure would create robust legal mechanisms to limit weapons proliferation across the nation.

Ghana participates in the Saving Lives Entity Fund, a United Nations program supporting member countries in combating armed violence and illegal weapons trafficking. The initiative operates through collaboration among UN agencies, government bodies and organizations like WAANSA Ghana, the National Commission for Small Arms and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre. Kinney stated that proper firearms regulation remains essential for development and expressed frustration over prolonged delays in advancing the bill. He called on journalists and various stakeholders to amplify advocacy efforts, noting his organization's commitment to helping decision-makers recognize the importance of establishing legal frameworks to control small arms distribution.
