The leader of Parliament, Mr Wetang'ula, counted the number of members each team had. He found that Kenya Kwanza has more people than Azimio: 165 vs. 154. He said everything would stay the same, with Kenya Kwanza leading Parliament.
A court recently told Mr Wetang'ula he made a mistake when he first picked Kenya Kwanza as the bigger team. Mr Wetang'ula said the court didn't tell him which team he should lead; he just counted the members again.
Mr Wetang'ula explained how both teams started. Azimio came first in April 2022. Twenty-one different groups, including ODM and Jubilee, joined to make Azimio. Kenya Kwanza started later, in June 2022. Eleven groups, including UDA, joined to make Kenya Kwanza. Four more groups joined Kenya Kwanza after the election in September 2022.
In October last year, Mr Wetang'ula said Kenya Kwanza would lead Parliament. This happened because fourteen members left Azimio and joined Kenya Kwanza. The court later said Mr Wetang'ula broke the rules when he made this change. The court told him he needed better reasons to change who leads Parliament.
