Moses Wetang'ula, the National Assembly Speaker, plans to travel to Trans Nzoia County today. He will visit the family home of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati to express condolences. Wetang'ula's office indicated he would arrive with several other leadership figures.
The former IEBC chairman died on February 20 at a medical facility in Nairobi where he had been receiving care. His funeral arrangements include a service scheduled for March 5 at CITAM Karen in Nairobi beginning at 11:00 am. The burial ceremony will take place on March 8.
Family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa revealed that Chebukati had been diagnosed with brain cancer in April 2023, shortly after completing his term of service. In April 2024, Chebukati experienced a return of the tumor and underwent surgery in Germany, where he remained until August 2024. The illness returned in December 2024.
Chebukati was hospitalized through early January. He later attended a standard medical check-up on February 12, 2024. Medical staff determined he needed admission to the Intensive Care Unit because of chest complications. He passed away during his treatment. A special memorial event will honor him at his Kitale residence on March 7, just before his interment.
