Bandau assemblyman Datuk Wetrom Bahanda will abandon his current seat to run in Matunggong for the 17th Sabah State Election after grassroots supporters requested the move. The deputy president of Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat said on Sunday that he remains connected to Matunggong through his parliamentary duties as Kota Marudu MP. Wetrom captured the Bandau seat in the 16th State Election before defeating Parti Bersatu Sabah president Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili for Kota Marudu in 2022.
The party confirmed plans to field candidates in 36 constituencies while evaluating additional seats. Wetrom said KDM received multiple requests from other areas beyond the initial 20 seats under consideration. The party will compete independently without coalition partners in the election.
