A target group is a set of people a movie is made for. Knowing this group helps movie makers make good plans to tell people about their movies. For example, if a movie is for young people, they will use ways that young people like, such as social sites. But if the group is older people, old ways like TV and newspapers might work better.

The target audience is definitely the most important aspect to focus on in the movie business because the audience itself is main source of income for the film industry.

Audience profiling helps film producers to determine whether the film will perform well and how much profit that can be made from a specific audience.

Sometimes the target audience can be a niche market and from that perspective there shouldn't be high expectations from a profit making standpoint because a small audience will typically result in a low consumption of the motion picture than a broad established audience.

Film producers can also use comparisons as a measure of how the target audience will receive the movie based on similar motion pictures that have been released before. For example, film producers can analyze past movies that consists of the the leading cast members they are working with and draw the conclusion how the audience is most likely to respond to the leading cast and the storyline.

The Importance of Audience Categories to Film Producers
There are diverse audience categories that are used to narrow down the target audience and these include categories such as:

  • Income
  • Profession
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Religion
  • Lifestyle
The information on audience categories can be collected through various ways from advertising agencies, online ratings, focus groups and corporate media research companies.

In addition, film producers will make use of the audience categories on demographics as an effective approach towards marketing campaigns and promotion for the movie to be released on the market.

NOTE: "Demographics" is audience profiling method which defines the population based on the work that they do and this is frequently used by movie producers to see the income and the status of the film's target audience.
