WHO Rep Dr Bakyaita Begins Work Promises Better Gambian Health

Dr Nathan Nsubuga Bakyaita has become the new WHO Country Representative for The Gambia. At a ministry ceremony, he handed his official papers to Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Momodou Tangara. UN Resident Coordinator Mr Karl Frédérick Paul attended this key handover meeting. Both leaders pledged strong support for helping WHO boost public health across the country.

Minister Tangara welcomed the new representative warmly and assured him the government would back all WHO health programs. They hope to achieve the third Sustainable Development Goal, which focuses on health and well-being for all citizens. Dr Bakyaita brings impressive credentials as a Ugandan health specialist with years of experience creating medical policies and running health programs.

His previous job as a WHO Representative in Zambia showed his leadership skills during major health crises. He successfully coordinated responses to COVID-19, cholera, polio, measles, and anthrax outbreaks. The doctor proved talented at attracting funds from international partners like FCDO, USG, EU, Irish Aid, African Development Bank, Pandemic Fund, Global Fund, and Gavi to strengthen local healthcare.

His work improving disease outbreak systems and fighting malaria throughout Africa stands out among his achievements. Thanks to his deep knowledge of health policy, disease tracking systems, and donor relations, he can effectively address The Gambia's pressing medical needs. Dr. Bakyaita is excited about his new position and looks forward to teaming up with Gambian authorities, partners, and WHO staff to launch health projects benefiting everyone in the country.
