Why Keysearch and Ahrefs disagree on keyword difficulty

Ahrefs calculates keyword difficulty from referring domains pointing to the current top ten pages, while Keysearch blends more than a dozen on-page and off-page signals. Both put the answer on a 0-to-100 scale, but the shared scale creates an illusion of comparability. A 35 in one system is not the same object as a 35 in the other.

Ahrefs keeps its core KD deliberately narrow. It looks at the current top-ranking pages, calculates backlink competition from referring domains, removes certain outliers, and maps the result onto a logarithmic scale. On-page optimization, search intent, and your own site's strength are outside that core score.

Keysearch starts from the first-page results too, but its difficulty model is broader. Backlinks and referring domains matter alongside the strength of the ranking domains and how well the pages are optimized. The broader distinction in how Keysearch and Ahrefs judge keywords matters because identical-looking numbers are summarizing different competitive conditions.

The disagreement can tell you what kind of SERP you are facing​

A wide gap is more useful when you stop asking which score is correct. Suppose Ahrefs looks relatively forgiving while Keysearch looks much tougher. One possible explanation is a SERP with manageable page-level link profiles but strong domains, tightly optimized pages, or other signals that Keysearch includes and Ahrefs KD intentionally leaves out.

Treat that pattern as a clue, not proof. Keysearch does not publish a simple weighting sheet that lets you reverse-engineer every point in its score, so you cannot say a domain-strength metric caused a particular gap. You can, however, open the first-page analysis and see whether the visible competition supports the suspicion.

The reverse deserves the same treatment. A keyword can look hard in Ahrefs because the ranking pages have accumulated many referring domains, yet still contain results whose content fit, domain strength, or optimization looks uneven. Ahrefs is accurately describing link competition in that case, but it is not claiming to model every obstacle between your page and the top ten.

Backlinks are not a random ingredient in these systems. Google's early published search architecture explicitly treated link structure as useful ranking information, although modern ranking systems use far more than links alone. Historical importance explains why backlink data became such a durable part of difficulty metrics without making it a complete model of present-day ranking.

A live SERP settles more than two competing scores​

Start with the ranking pages themselves. Look for the weakest credible result you would actually need to beat, not merely the average strength of page one. A results page containing several modest pages is a different opportunity from one where every slot is held by a deeply established, tightly relevant page, even when a single score compresses both situations into similar territory.

Next, separate page strength from domain strength. A famous domain can rank a lightly linked page, while a smaller specialist can rank through a page with strong links and exact topical fit. Keysearch's broader model is designed to notice more of those differences, while Ahrefs gives you a cleaner read on the link hurdle.

Intent can overturn a tempting low score. If the first page is dominated by product pages, calculators, forums, videos, or another format your planned article does not satisfy, weak backlink numbers do not create an easy opening. A low KD is still useful for filtering a long list, but it cannot tell you whether your proposed page belongs in the result set.

Freshness deserves a check too. Keysearch has documented cached difficulty scores and allows older scores to be refreshed, while any competitive SERP can change as pages gain links, lose positions, or disappear. Before making a costly content decision from a large disagreement, refresh the available data and compare the same location and current result set.

Your own ranking history is the final calibration​

The best threshold is rarely a universal number such as 20, 30, or 40. Pull several keywords where your site already ranks well, then compare their difficulty scores and the actual strength of the pages you beat. Your previous wins give you a practical baseline grounded in your site's authority, topical relevance, content quality, and ability to earn links.

Use each platform consistently inside its own scale. If your site repeatedly wins Keysearch scores in the low thirties but struggles above the forties, that pattern is more useful than comparing a Keysearch 34 with an Ahrefs 34. Cross-tool equality is cosmetic.

When the tools disagree, keep both readings and inspect the reason for the gap. Ahrefs can tell you whether the link barrier looks heavy, while Keysearch can flag a broader competitive picture that deserves inspection. The decision belongs to the SERP, the pages you must beat, and evidence from what your own site has already managed to rank.
