Will And Starmer Rub Elbows With Trump At Pope Funeral

Prince William stood with Prime Minister Keir Starmer during Pope Francis' funeral at St Peter's Square on Saturday. The prince represented King Charles III as they paused silently before the pope's coffin. He wore a dark blue suit with a black tie and bowed his head before entering St Peter's Basilica to meet clergy members who guided him to his seat.

Before the service started, Starmer talked with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Zelensky met privately with Trump for 15 minutes as peace talks continue about the Ukraine war. The Ukrainian leader later called their meeting "good" and "very symbolic."

The funeral brought together 55 heads of state, 14 government leaders, and 12 monarchs. Former US President Joe Biden attended as well. Palace officials said Prince William briefly spoke with Trump and his wife, Melania, when entering the service.

During the ceremony, William sat in the third row next to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This marked his first time representing the king at an international funeral. Starmer attended with his wife Victoria and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88. Vatican officials estimated that 250,000 people gathered in and around St Peter's Square for the funeral service.
