Windows 11 Insider Braces for Quantum Hackers

Microsoft added new security features to Windows 11 that protect against powerful quantum computers. The company is concerned about machines like Majorana 1 that could compromise current encryption methods. Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27852 features two specialized algorithms for enhanced protection. ML-KEM handles secure key sharing between computers. ML-DSA creates digital signatures that quantum machines cannot fake.

The ML-KEM system offers three different strength levels for organizations to choose from. Level 1 creates 800-byte encrypted messages with 32-byte secret keys. Level 3 makes larger 1,184-byte messages but keeps the same secret size. Level 5 produces the biggest 1,568-byte messages for maximum security. Companies can pick the level that matches their needs.

Digital signatures operate through the ML-DSA system, offering three power options. Level 2 generates compact keys at 1,312 and 2,560 bytes, accompanied by 2,420-byte signatures. Level 3 increases everything to 1,952 and 4,032 bytes with 3,309-byte signatures. Level 5 offers the strongest protection with 2,592-byte public keys and 4,896-byte private keys. The signatures reach 4,627 bytes for maximum security.

Microsoft recommends running both new and old encryption methods simultaneously for enhanced defense. Early testers can measure how the changes affect computer performance and certificate storage. Linux systems also received similar updates through SymCrypt-OpenSSL version 1.9.0. The company plans to expand quantum protection to more Windows security systems later. Both Windows and Linux users can experiment with the technology right away.
