Xbox Next Gen May Ditch Intel for Snapdragon

Microsoft might build its next Xbox devices with Snapdragon chips. A recent Qualcomm job posting mentioned supporting the next Xbox products made with Snapdragon parts. This change from current x86 chips to ARM technology would make Xbox devices use less power. The shift would help a future Xbox handheld last longer between charges. These changes might create problems for older games that need x86 systems to run.

Microsoft never said they plan to make a handheld Xbox, though Phil Spencer hinted about it many times. Reports claim the company has several devices coming soon. One device might compete with the Steam Deck and run Windows software with the help of the ASUS computer maker. Another would replace the current Xbox Series X home console. Microsoft wants to enter the portable market because Nintendo shows strong sales with its Switch.

Sony also plans to join the handheld race again. They reportedly are working on a PlayStation 6 portable system. Another home PlayStation might play PS5 games, but with less power than the current models.
