Xiaomi chip race reaches 3 nm tapeout stage

Xiaomi plans to launch its first phone chips next year. According to reports, by October 2024, they had already finished designing a 3 nanometer chip. Around that time, they began searching for a manufacturing partner. People noticed something unusual—a test design connected to Taiwan's TSMC factory with their 4 nanometer N4P process. This raised eyebrows since Xiaomi seemed able to access better manufacturing than other Chinese companies.

Wccftech published an article describing interesting details about the situation. US trade limits apparently haven't affected Xiaomi, who remains on track to release homemade chips this year. Previous reports suggested a 3-nanometer chip would arrive by 2025. Fresh details reveal they plan to use TSMC's N4P process after all. Unlike Qualcomm with its latest processors, Xiaomi won't include any self-developed cores in their design.

Jukanlosreve highlighted another leak last week regarding Xiaomi's mystery phone processor. The information came from Fixed Focus Digital, who posted about the N4P chip design. Their post specified that the chip would contain current Arm Cortex-X925, Cortex-A725, and Cortex-A520 units. They claimed the graphics system from Imagination Technologies would beat Qualcomm's Adreno 740. This comparison refers to graphics found in Qualcomm chips released back in 2022.

Wccftech expressed doubt about this information in their article. The publication believes Fixed Focus Digital lacks credibility as an insider source. Mochamad Farido Fanani replied to questions about this, dismissing the claims as blind guesses. He questioned whether Xiaomi could actually use N4P technology in their chips at all. Earlier rumors about N4P suggested performance similar to Qualcomm's original Snapdragon 8 processor from late 2021.
