Xiaomi chips away at US control hurdles

The U.S. is trying to stop Chinese companies from using the latest manufacturing tech from TSMC, but it looks like Xiaomi hasn't been affected yet. Rumors say that Xiaomi is still planning to release its first in-house chipset before the year ends. Last year, we heard Xiaomi would show off a custom 3nm chip in 2025, but we just found out the first version will use TSMC's 4nm "N4P" process instead. And unlike Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite, this chip won't have any homegrown cores.

Xiaomi's new custom chipset is also rumored to have an Imagination Technologies graphics chip called the IMG DXT 72-2304. A Weibo post from Fixed Focus Digital, shared by @Jukanlosreve on X, spilled the beans on Xiaomi's upcoming chipset. Even though the more advanced 3nm chip successfully made it through the tape-out stage, it seems like we'll see the 4nm version first. Xiaomi's unnamed chipset will use the same lithography as Qualcomm's previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with a "1 + 3 + 4" CPU cluster setup. But based on the latest info, it won't have any in-house cores and will stick with current ARM designs instead.

The fastest core will be the Cortex-X925, running at 3.20GHz. Then, there are four Cortex-A725 cores at 2.60GHz and low-power Cortex-A520 cores at 2.00GHz. Alongside this cluster is an Imagination Technologies IMG DXT 72-2304 GPU running at 1.30GHz. The tipster says this GPU will be faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2's Adreno 740. Unfortunately, there's no word on when this chipset will launch. But based on an earlier rumor, we expect Xiaomi to officially announce it in the first half of this year, with performance similar to Qualcomm's older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Our friend @faridofanani96 on X said Fixed Focus Digital often makes wild guesses like these, so we should take this information with a grain of salt. Still, there have been many reports about Xiaomi's progress in reviving its chip-making dreams, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for more updates. We'll also find out if the U.S. tries to put the brakes on Xiaomi's plans by stopping TSMC from doing business with them.

It's exciting to see Xiaomi working on its chipset, even if the first version might not be as advanced as we had hoped. Using TSMC's 4nm process and current ARM cores is still a big step forward. And if the rumors about the IMG DXT 72-2304 GPU are true, this chipset could give Qualcomm's offerings a run for their money. We'll have to wait and see what Xiaomi announces and how well the chipset performs in real-world tests. But one thing's for sure - the smartphone chip market is heating up, and Xiaomi wants a piece of the action.
