Xinjiang artists rock Manas epic, youth embrace ancient hero

Master performer Jangnur Turganbay witnesses young artists transform the ancient Manas epic through rock adaptations. These musicians blend traditional Kirgiz komuz instruments with electric guitars to attract modern audiences. The heroic tale chronicles Manas and seven generations battling evil forces across centuries of oral tradition. UNESCO recognized this cultural treasure as intangible heritage in 2009.

Chinese authorities have documented Manas performances since the 1960s to preserve the epic for future generations. Folk singers called Manaschi master this vast story that exceeds Homer's Odyssey by eighteen times in length. Publications span multiple languages while stage adaptations began in 1984. Regional legal protections became effective May 2025 to strengthen cultural safeguarding efforts.
