University Drops Legal Case Against Staff in Gambian Education Dispute.

The University of the Gambia has stepped back from its court battle with striking staff members. The school withdrew its contempt case against the Faculty and Staff Association on Wednesday.

The dispute began when teachers stopped work to protest the firing of two senior staff members. The university had tried to block this action. They claimed it went against a 2021 court order that banned strikes.

The staff's lawyers fought back. Lamin J Darboe and Sheriff K Jobe said the recent strike was different from the 2021 case. They told the court it should reject the university's claims.

Both sides were set to present their arguments on January 9. But the university pulled its case before the hearing could start.

Yorro Njie, who leads the staff group, called this a big win. He praised the school's new chairman, Professor Momodou Mustapha Fanneh. Njie thanked him for helping bring peace back to campus.

The staff leader also thanked the government for intervening to help solve the problem. He highlighted the free legal help from three lawyers who supported the teachers' cause.

This ending marks a fresh start for the university. Instead of fighting in court, both sides can focus on teaching students.
