YouTube tests in-app chats for video sharing

YouTube is experimenting with a new system for sending videos through private chats within its mobile application. The test, currently available only to adult users in Ireland and Poland, enables the direct sharing of content like Shorts and livestreams. Tapping the share button opens a full-screen interface for starting individual or group conversations where participants can respond with videos, text, or emojis.

Company representatives noted that an integrated messaging function is a highly demanded capability, as viewers currently must export videos to external platforms. This new attempt follows the retirement of a prior messaging service, which was discontinued amid concerns over usage rates and user safety.

The current trial includes several protective measures. It mandates that all chat participants mutually agree to connect before any communication can start. Users also have access to blocking and reporting functions, along with the ability to retract sent messages. All conversations will be monitored for adherence to the platform's conduct rules.
