Zabariah Yusof Takes Over as Acting Appeal Court President

Judge Zabariah Mohd Yusof stepped into the top Court of Appeal job after her predecessor called it quits yesterday. The Federal Court judge will handle all the duties that come with running Malaysia's second most powerful court. Chief Judge Hasnah Mohammed Hashim picked Zabariah for the role under special legal powers. The appointment letter went out to other top court officials across the country. Zabariah will keep the position until someone gets the permanent job.

The veteran judge started her legal career back in 2009 when she became a Judicial Commissioner. She worked at the Kuala Lumpur High Court before moving to different locations around Malaysia. Zabariah earned her stripes as a proper High Court judge in 2010 and later transferred to Seremban. She bounced back to Kuala Lumpur in 2016 before climbing the judicial ladder. Her promotion to Court of Appeal judge happened that same year.

Zabariah reached the Federal Court level in late 2019 and became part of the Judicial Appointments Commission recently. She turned 66 this past April but scored a special six-month extension to keep working. The Court of Appeal president job ranks as the second most important position in Malaysia's entire court system. Only the Chief Justice holds more power than this role in the country's legal hierarchy.
