ZACC recovers $39M, vows tougher crackdown

Zimbabwe's anti-corruption agency has reclaimed assets valued at more than $39 million during the past six years while sending cases worth over $217 million to national prosecutors. Commission Chairman Michael Reza announced the figures on Monday during a planning session held in Nyanga as officials prepare to introduce their 2026 through 2030 corruption prevention framework. An independent review determined that 61 percent of initial strategy objectives were met between 2019 and the present.

The Asset Recovery and Forfeiture Unit secured approximately $21 million through completed forfeitures and placed seizures on another $17 million in property. Bank accounts totaling nearly $1 million faced freezing orders during this period. Reza said conviction rates ranged from 71 to 74 percent across the last five years. He emphasized that remaining gaps allow corruption to persist and drain economic resources. The commission plans to shift toward preventive measures and greater public visibility rather than only conducting reactive enforcement actions.

Officials from multiple government agencies attended the workshop to refine cooperative strategies for combating graft. Reza stressed that staff members must maintain integrity standards while pursuing accountability from others. The upcoming five-year plan will incorporate monitoring systems aligned with national development goals through 2030.
