Zambians Reeling As Edgar Lungu Kicks Bucket

Edgar Lungu passed away on Thursday at age 68. The former Zambian president died at a medical center in South Africa. His political party announced the news on its Facebook page. The Patriotic Front confirmed his death after weeks of medical treatment.

Lungu served as Zambia's leader from 2015 to 2021. He lost his bid for reelection to Hakainde Hichilema. The Southern African nation chose new leadership after six years under Lungu. His presidency began when Michael Sata died in office. Lungu won the next election and stayed in power until 2021.

His daughter Tasila spoke about her father's final days. She works as a member of parliament for Zambia. The family kept his medical condition private during treatment. Tasila said doctors watched over him carefully before he died. She appeared in a video message posted by the party.

Lungu worked as a lawyer before entering politics. He held the positions of justice minister and defense minister. After losing the 2021 election, he stepped back from public life. He returned to politics in 2023 and became the Patriotic Front candidate again. However, Zambia's highest court blocked him from running for another term last December.
