Zanu PF Chair Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri Faces Criticism Over Delayed DCC Elections

Zanu PF leaders are attacking party chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri over delayed elections for district coordination committees. The current DCCs have served past their two-year terms without replacement votes being held. Party sources say Muchinguri has failed to meet basic constitutional duties. Critics claim she creates separate power structures because she wants to become president. The DCCs hold major influence over who gains control within the ruling party.

District coordination committees consist of elected members from cells and branches across three party wings. Each district contains 10 branches whose delegates choose executive committees every two years. These committees directly affect elections for provincial groups, the central committee and the politburo. DCC members can attend party congress meetings with voting rights. Their power makes them central to succession battles within Zanu PF.

One politburo member said the national chairperson has failed to organize properly for the party. Another member called the current leadership outdated and lacking fresh ideas. Party information director Farai Marapira defended the leadership as united and focused on cell verification work. He blamed enemies trying to divide Zanu PF. Marapira said the party has met constitutional obligations since 1963.

Former President Robert Mugabe banned DCCs during 2012 after factions caused severe divisions. Current President Emmerson Mnangagwa brought back the committees during 2020. Political observers say the current chaos exposes deep factional splits within the ruling party. The committee disputes reveal ongoing power struggles that have plagued Zanu PF for years.
