Zanu PF elevates Tagwirei, setting up a clash with Chiwenga

Patrick Chinamasa announced that businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei has joined Zanu PF's Central Committee despite internal party opposition. The legal secretary confirmed that the Harare Provincial Coordinating Committee nominated Tagwirei on March 31, 2025. The Politburo approved his membership during meetings on July 2 and July 30. Chinamasa dismissed critics as spreading false information about the controversial appointment. He emphasized that party rules permit loyal members to receive committee positions.

The decision creates tensions between different party factions ahead of potential leadership changes. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga leads opposition groups that resist Tagwirei's political advancement. Party insiders believe President Emmerson Mnangagwa supports the businessman as a potential successor rather than Chiwenga. Spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa previously stated that Tagwirei lacks proper qualifications for the position. The United States and United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on Tagwirei for alleged corruption, though Zimbabwe has never filed criminal charges against him.
