Zanu-PF splits over Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's term fight

Zimbabwe's constitution requires public referendum approval for presidential term limit amendments and prohibits applying such changes to benefit sitting leaders. ZANU-PF has directed the government to pursue legislative modifications that would keep President Emmerson Mnangagwa in power through 2030, surpassing constitutional restrictions that mandate his departure after completing a second term.

Internal party divisions have intensified over the extension proposal, with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga openly opposing the initiative during a Politburo meeting. Supporters of the plan have formed competing sub-factions with divergent succession strategies. One group advocates for Mnangagwa to resign before completing three years of his current mandate, which would permit him to contest elections and serve an additional five years if victorious. This approach would allow the party to install an interim president while Mnangagwa maintains influence as party leader.

Legal experts note that resignation before a specific threshold date would preserve eligibility under constitutional provisions, though implementation would require careful coordination among competing party interests seeking eventual succession.
