Zeenat Aman reflects on her iconic role in Satyam Shivam Sundaram

Veteran actress Zeenat Aman, celebrating her 74th birthday, has reflected on her groundbreaking performance in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, where she portrayed a character with facial disfigurement during an era when Bollywood demanded flawless beauty from its heroines. The actress told reporters her decision to accept the role stemmed from a desire to escape typecasting rather than any symbolic statement, explaining she welcomed the chance to work with director Raj Kapoor and move beyond her established westernized screen persona.

The 1970s film explored themes of physical versus spiritual love through the story of Roopa, a vocalist concealing her scarred face from her husband Rajeev, played by Shashi Kapoor. Aman recalled how Kapoor encouraged her to abandon inhibitions and fully inhabit the character.

The actress has recently narrated Embers of Hope: The Fight for Our Future, a documentary series airing on the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.
