Licenses for a big chunk of new power generation just got handed out. The energy regulator approved three independent projects totaling four hundred forty megawatts. Zhong An Coking and Power Company in Hwange scored a license for two hundred forty megawatts from a heat recovery plant. Two Gweru-based firms, Huoyuntong Investments and Changshi Power, will each produce one hundred megawatts.
This move addresses the country's persistent electricity shortage. Demand regularly outpaces supply, causing rolling blackouts and forcing imports. Peak need sits around twenty two hundred megawatts, but local generation frequently falls short. Recent output figures showed Hwange Power Station providing most of the national supply, with a smaller contribution from Kariba and other independent producers. The new licensed capacity could help close that gap once operational.
