ZESA Enterprises grows transformer exports

ZESA Enterprises, a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, has significantly increased its transformer manufacturing output, with production rising to 1,940 units this year from 1,297 last year. The company's acting managing director, Dr. Godfrey Mugaviri, reported these figures to Parliament, highlighting successful exports of 800 transformers to Zambia and 117 to Rwanda, with plans to expand into other regional markets.

Despite this strong performance, Dr. Mugaviri identified outdated machinery, some over seventy years old, as a major constraint that creates inefficiencies and increases production costs. He appealed for a capital injection to modernize equipment. He also urged legislators to support a ban on cheap transformer imports, which he stated would help protect and grow the local manufacturing industry.

The parliamentary committee's chairperson, Charlton Hwende, commended ZESA Enterprises as one of the country's best-performing public entities. He noted that the company is currently operating at 85 percent of its capacity and expressed confidence that with greater resources, its performance could be further enhanced.
