ZESA Executive Chairman Dr. Sydney Gata Dies at 78, Leaving Legacy in Energy Sector

Zimbabwe lost a power industry giant when Dr. Sydney Zikuzo Gata passed away at age 78. The ZESA Holdings executive chairman fought for better electricity across the country for decades. His death shocked the energy world and left a huge gap at the top of the power company. ZESA bosses called his passing devastating and praised his life work. Gata spent years fixing the country's electricity problems during tough times.

The veteran engineer made history back in 1981 as the first Black person to run the Electricity Supply Commission. He climbed the ranks from general manager to CEO and finally executive chairman before his death. Gata cared deeply about ZESA workers and always looked out for their welfare. His technical skills and leadership helped transform the power company during crisis periods. The energy expert became famous for tackling long-standing electricity supply issues head-on.

Gata worked around the world on major energy projects beyond Zimbabwe's borders. He served on the World Energy Council from 1992 to 1994 and held senior positions there. The African Development Bank and UK energy companies also hired him for his expertise. Before joining the power industry, Gata taught mechanical and aeronautical engineering at top universities. He worked at Chelsea College and City University in London before returning home to teach.

His wife Angeline Gata serves as Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education. The couple raised children and grandchildren who survive him. Tributes poured in from across Africa and beyond after news of his death spread. Many people called Gata a visionary leader and true nation builder. His legacy will live on through the energy reforms he championed throughout his remarkable career.
