Zimbabwe's power utility is modernizing three decommissioned thermal stations in Munyati, Bulawayo, and Harare through technological upgrades rather than complete replacement, according to acting Zesa Holdings chief executive Cletus Nyachowe during a parliamentary committee visit to Hwange Power Station. The Munyati facility has begun operations using advanced boiler systems and higher temperature specifications that increase output while maintaining quality standards.
Testing confirmed that coal from Sengwa Mine in Gokwe works effectively with upgraded equipment at Munyati, eliminating costly transportation from Hwange and substantially reducing operational expenses. The three stations, originally constructed between 1942 and 1957, were retired after decades of service due to inefficiency and environmental compliance issues.
Nyachowe indicated that hydropower opportunities using low-head technology at Eastern Highlands dams could add capacity to the national grid. The revitalization addresses persistent generation shortfalls that have caused extended load-shedding affecting industrial and residential consumers.
