Zetdc boss axed over Sona blackout

Zimbabwe's power utility suspended its transmission chief after electricity failed at Parliament while President Mnangagwa addressed lawmakers on Tuesday. ZESA Holdings CEO Cletus Nyachowe has removed Managing Director Abel Gurupira pending an investigation into the blackout and an earlier outage that occurred before a Zanu PF conference in Mutare.

Parliament operated on backup generators with main power on standby when the disruption occurred. Clerk Kennedy Chokuda said a tripped circuit breaker caused the failure and delayed restoration. The president finished his address using a torchlight.

National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda promised accountability for those responsible. Gurupira remains on full salary but cannot contact staff while authorities investigate. A multi-agency team from Parliament, local government, and ZESA examines the cause to prevent future incidents.
