ZIFA blocks PSL bid to freeze relegation

Zimbabwe's football association intervened to block a Premier Soccer League attempt to eliminate relegation for the current campaign, which would have allowed struggling clubs to retain top-flight status without earning survival through competition. ZIFA rejected the proposal after PSL delegates representing all 18 clubs voted to suspend demotion and expand membership to 22 teams for the transitional period.

The football association emphasized that promotion and demotion represent essential elements of competitive integrity within the sport's hierarchical structure. Officials confirmed that four clubs will face relegation when the season concludes, preserving the competitive stakes for final matches.

The controversy erupted after PSL members sought to protect multiple teams from demotion, including Kwekwe United, which had accumulated just 10 points through 33 matches. ZIFA leadership stated that any modifications to league size or competition format require formal submission and consideration at a congress meeting according to organizational statutes.
