Zim secures spot on Africa AI Council, eyes digital leadership

Zimbabwe just got a seat at the continent's AI strategy table. The country's ICT Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, joined the new Africa AI Council. This group operates under the Smart Africa initiative.

The council is a high-level body formed by Rwandan President Paul Kagame. It includes African heads of state, AU officials, and key private partners. The goal is to guide Africa's approach to artificial intelligence governance and investment.

Mavetera is one of only seven ICT ministers on the council. This spot gives Zimbabwe direct influence over continental digital policy. The group will set direction on AI infrastructure, ethics, and talent development.

The appointment highlights Zimbabwe's own policy readiness. The government approved a National AI Strategy last November. This framework aims to use the technology for economic growth and better services.

The country is already a leader in digital agriculture within Smart Africa. Zimbabwe helped create a Continental Agritech Blueprint. This plan uses digital tools like AI to boost farming and food security.

The council selection was a competitive process. It drew over four hundred applications from across various sectors. Zimbabwe's inclusion strengthens its voice in shaping the region's tech future. It aligns with the national vision for innovation-led growth by 2030.
