Nigeria trains 350K in AI, eyes digital dominance

Microsoft's big AI training push in Nigeria has hit a new mark, reaching over three hundred fifty thousand people. This effort is a team-up with Nigeria's federal government, Data Science Nigeria, and Lagos Business School. It is part of a wider national skills initiative that has trained millions in digital skills since 2021.

Company officials stated Nigeria has to move fast on AI education to stay competitive and not miss a major economic shift. A business school dean echoed that, calling AI skills the new essential foundation for growth and innovation. The program's current phase aims to train one million citizens within three years. A significant focus has been on government leaders, with nearly one hundred public sector officials, including legislators, learning about AI strategy and reporting.

Developer training is also a major component, upskilling hundreds through government-linked programs on analytics and machine learning. For a broader audience, Microsoft ran an AI Skills Week that drew hundreds of thousands of participants, with thousands getting certified. A hackathon during that event produced practical AI tools for finance-related tasks like fraud detection.

Partners emphasized that this kind of transformation needs everyone involved, from officials to teachers to communities, moving together. Future plans include more upskilling in AI and cybersecurity. Microsoft's general manager for the region pointed to projections showing Nigeria could capture a large share of Africa's coming AI productivity gains, arguing this work is key to building a ready workforce.
