Zimbabwe plays a beautiful song when people raise their flag. They call it Simudzai Mureza wedu WeZimbabwe in the Shona language. This means Raise our flag of Zimbabwe when translated. Ndebele speakers name it Kalibusiswe Ilizwe leZimbabwe - Blessed Be the Land of Zimbabwe.
The country started using this anthem back in March 1994. Before that, Zimbabweans sang Ishe Komborera Africa since gaining freedom from British rule in 1980. The government held a contest asking citizens to create a new national song. More than 500 people sent their music ideas, hoping to win.
Two talented men worked together on the winning entry. Fred Changundega created the melody everyone hears today. Professor Solomon Mutswairo wrote powerful words in Shona that spoke to Zimbabwean hearts. Later, people translated these words into English, Ndebele, and many other local languages.
Fred Changundega taught music and wrote several famous songs, including My Zimbabwe and The African Child. Professor Mutswairo became famous for his poems, novels and teaching.
