Zimbabwe Arrests Over 9,000 Illegal Transport Operators in Nationwide Crackdown

Authorities grabbed more than 9,000 illegal taxi drivers across the country during 2025. The massive sweep targets unlicensed vehicles that locals call mshika-shika operators. Home Affairs boss Ambassador Tayerera Faranisi told lawmakers about the huge arrest numbers. Police forces continue hunting down rule-breaking transport workers every day. The government wants to clean up dangerous road conditions caused by rogue drivers.

Parliament members heard shocking details about widespread bribes among taxi crews and cops. Deputy Police Commissioner Leny Ncube admitted corruption runs deep on both sides of the law. Transport operators actually budget money for paying off officers instead of following proper rules. Many drivers would rather slip cash to police than pay legitimate fees. The dirty money system has become normal practice for survival.

Ncube painted a dark picture of how bribery destroys society from the inside out. He explained that police officers cannot corrupt themselves without someone offering illegal payments. When a twenty-dollar fee becomes a thirty-dollar bribe, everyone loses except the crooked players. The deputy commissioner called for a massive national campaign against corruption. Government officials promised stronger enforcement and tougher penalties for both illegal operators and dirty cops.
