Zimbabwe deploys drones to combat mineral smuggling rings

Zimbabwe's Mineral Marketing Corporation purchased unmanned aircraft systems to monitor illegal mining operations across the nation. The state enterprise will deploy these surveillance devices to track mineral transportation and examine production stockpiles. Dr. Nomsa Moyo leads the corporation's efforts to strengthen oversight capabilities through advanced technology. Remote area monitoring becomes possible while officials conduct precise volumetric measurements of excavated materials. These aircraft enable real-time detection of unauthorized mineral extraction activities.

Mining contributes twelve percent to Zimbabwe's gross domestic product and generates eighty percent of export revenues. The sector provides substantial employment opportunities while producing gold, platinum, chrome, nickel, coal, lithium, and diamonds. Government officials target upper-middle income status by 2030 through enhanced mining sector performance. Recent studies reveal significant revenue losses from mineral smuggling operations using private aircraft. The corporation establishes whistle-blowing systems to encourage citizens to report corruption that reduces mineral revenues.
