Zimbabwe Expands Irrigation to 120,000ha for Food Security

Zimbabwe Grows More Food With New Water Plan.

Zimbabwe wants more farms to use water pipes and sprinklers. The country plans to water 120,000 fields this year, up from 75,000 last year.

Leonard Munamati runs the farm advice office. He said farmers will grow corn on 50,000 fields. They plan to add beans to 40,000 more fields. The rest will grow other crops.

Farmers own many machines to help grow food. They have over 15,000 tractors and 300 big machines that pick crops. These tools can farm more than a million fields. By early December, farmers had already dug up 2.6 million fields.

The water office makes sure farms get what they need. Each farmer must sign up to get water for their crops. Banks promised money to help farms grow more food. They set aside 395 million ZiG and 144 million US dollars.

The farms have plenty of plant food ready. They stored 174,732 tons of fertilizer, but they needed more—about 780,000 tons for the whole growing season.

Teachers help farmers learn better ways to grow crops. They started 35,000 farm schools. These schools taught 2.5 million farmers how to deal with bad weather. They learned ways to keep their crops safe.

The country made new rules about land. These rules help farmers get money from banks more easily. They also made a list of all farmers to help give out supplies faster.

Bug watchers monitor crop-eating worms. They immediately see no danger from these pests, which allows farmers to work without worry.

Zimbabwe's big push to water more farms shows that it wants to grow more food at home. When farmers, leaders, and helpers work together, farms improve for everyone.
