Zimbabwe farms its way toward zero hunger

International development agencies report that Zimbabwe is nearing its zero hunger goal through climate-smart agriculture and sustained investment in resilient food systems. Following the official World Food Day opening at Matopos Research Institute, the Lands Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri stated that the country's food system transformation was accelerating. He noted that climate-proof practices and partnerships with organizations like IFAD and FAO were building a system capable of withstanding climate shocks.

An IFAD representative, Joylyn Ndoro, confirmed significant progress in developing resilient rural livelihoods. She reported that IFAD had invested nearly 400 million dollars in Zimbabwe since 1980, supporting smallholder farmers with irrigation and technology. Ndoro also highlighted new initiatives, including the 66.55 million dollar Horticulture Enterprise Enhancement Project, which, alongside other programs, aims to benefit nearly 150,000 households.
