Zimbabwe Ferrochrome Goldrush Heats Up Fast

Zimbabwe boosts ferrochrome production to strengthen its steel industry position. The country wants more factories that process chrome instead of selling raw materials overseas. Officials banned chrome ore exports and require mining companies to build smelters. Ten producers currently make between 3,000 and 84,000 tons each year. All facilities combined produce about 270,000 tons annually.

The Palm River Project started operations and makes 100,000 tons per year. Workers plan to expand the Beitbridge facility to one million tons capacity. This would make Palm River the biggest ferrochrome producer across Zimbabwe. Chrome helps manufacturers create stainless steel for kitchen appliances and buildings.

Government ministers announced strict rules for chrome mining permits above 100 hectares. Companies must build furnaces before receiving large mining rights. Officials will take away unused mining claims from inactive holders. The policy forces businesses to add value locally rather than export raw chrome. Ferrochrome prices change quickly on world markets making the industry risky.
