Zimbabwe tied Mauritius 0-0 during their first COSAFA Cup Group A game at Toyota Stadium Wednesday. Mauritius controlled the ball early and created two scoring chances that missed the target. Tinotenda Meke fired a shot over the goal from the penalty area around the tenth minute. Kennedy Mupomba tried another shot but also missed badly. The game moved to midfield without much action near either goal.
Meke shot again after 40 minutes but defenders blocked it for a corner kick. Arter Kaseke headed the corner over the crossbar during the set piece. Thando Ngwenya scored from a pass but referees canceled the goal for offside. Zimbabwe finished the first half without any shots on target despite controlling the pace better.
Both teams played carefully during the second half opening 15 minutes. Mauritius attacked quickly after an hour and managed their first shot on goal. They threatened again five minutes later but the assistant referee raised the offside flag. Mauritius scored in the 73rd minute but VAR officials ruled out the goal for handball.
Zimbabwe made four player changes and almost scored late through Andrew Mbeba whose header missed narrowly. Mozambique beat South Africa 1-0 in the other Group A match to lead the standings.
