Zimbabwe football legend Nevison Masunda died Thursday morning in Bulawayo at age 101. The former striker known as Scorer had been caring for his sick wife when he suddenly fell ill. His eldest son Robson confirmed that his father stayed healthy until Tuesday before getting sick for just two days. Masunda passed away at a city surgery after a brief illness. The football hero celebrated his 101st birthday back in March.
Masunda played for Mashonaland United starting in 1944 when he was just 20 years old. He teamed up with future Vice President Joseph Msika during his playing days at the club. The speedy forward earned his nickname because he rarely missed the net when shooting. Southern Rhodesia national selectors picked him repeatedly for international matches against neighboring countries. Players received three pounds for cup matches which bought plenty of goods back then.
The football star retired from playing in 1953 to focus on work and family life. He married the daughter of a Saints official and stayed loyal to the club throughout his long life. Masunda moved from Chivhu to Buhera as a child when white settlers took the better farmland. He later traveled to Bulawayo like many young men searching for employment opportunities. Funeral services will happen Friday at Nyaradzo Funerals before burial Saturday in Chawatama Village.
