Soviet football legend Nikita Simonyan has died at 99, passing away as the world's oldest surviving Olympic champion. Russian Football Union officials announced the death of the striker who helped his nation capture gold at the 1956 Melbourne Games.

Simonyan spent his playing career with Moscow clubs Krylia Sovetov and Spartak, claiming four Soviet championships and two domestic cups while establishing himself as Spartak's record goalscorer with 160 strikes. After hanging up his boots in 1959, he transitioned into management, leading Spartak, Ararat Yerevan, Chornomorets Odessa, and the Soviet national squad before ascending to administrative roles within Russian football governance until his final days.
