The Zimbabwean government is recapitalizing its Department of Roads to enhance national road construction and maintenance. According to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, this initiative involves installing asphalt plants in all ten provinces to produce premix for road repairs and major projects. Work on the first plant in the Harare Metropolitan Province is already advanced.
Transport Minister Felix Mhona recently informed the Senate that the government is considering assuming control of all roads from local authorities. This proposed move, which would require parliamentary approval, aims to address poor road conditions and coordination issues. The Ministry also confirmed the ongoing resuscitation of 108 Road Maintenance Units across the country to preserve recently rehabilitated roads.
