The government started looking into why a Rovos Rail passenger train hit a Bulawayo-Beitbridge Railway cargo train on Good Friday. Workers are fixing the damaged tracks near Gwanda Town where the crash happened around 7 AM. This important tourism route brings many international visitors to Zimbabwe. The crash caused one coach to flip over about five meters from the track, trapping a crew member inside. Firefighters spent two hours rescuing the hurt man.
Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi checked the accident site Saturday to see the damage. She said the government wants to help because the train carried people from Canada, the USA, the UK, Denmark, Switzerland, and South Africa. President Mnangagwa ordered that everything possible be done to get the train running again soon. The Rovos Rail service connects Zimbabwe to global markets through South Africa. The minister thanked everyone who helped with the rescue.
Eight people went to Mater Dei Hospital after the crash—seven crew members and one American tourist. A South African crew member needed a 12-hour spine operation. The train was carrying 47 tourists from several countries when the accident happened. Minister Rwodzi visited both the injured people and the tourists staying at a nearby hotel. Rovos Rail manager Louis Jonga thanked the government for its support during this difficult time.
