Zimbabwe ratifies SADC Employment and Labour Protocol for decent work

Zimbabwe approved a new regional agreement about worker rights and job security across southern Africa. The country signed the Southern African Development Community Protocol on Employment and Labour after government ministers voted to accept it. Officials want to create better working conditions for people across the region. The protocol became available for countries to sign during an August 2024 meeting of African leaders. Minister Jenfan Muswere told reporters that his government supports the new rules.

The agreement focuses on protecting basic human rights for workers and making sure countries follow international labor standards. Regional governments want to make employment laws similar across all member nations. Zimbabwe hosted a meeting of labor ministers from other African countries earlier this year. Officials discussed ways to help young people find jobs and reduce informal work that lacks legal protection. Leaders also talked about how technology changes affect workers.

The protocol addresses several major workplace issues that affect millions of people. Governments plan to help informal businesses become official companies with proper worker protections. Officials want to create safer work environments and prevent job-related accidents and diseases. The agreement also focuses on helping young people who cannot find work or educational opportunities. Countries will work together to make it easier for people to move between nations for employment.

Zimbabwe also agreed to follow international safety rules for workplaces. The government accepted Convention 187 which sets standards for preventing workplace injuries and deaths. Officials selected Zimbabwe as one of six African countries to test new artificial intelligence guidelines. UNESCO chose these nations to help develop ethical rules for using AI technology safely.
