Zimbabwe rides clean energy wave with local solar smarts

Zimbabwe plans to start making solar panels and lithium batteries soon. The government wants local universities to work with international companies that have technology expertise.

The cabinet approved an agreement with the International Solar Alliance to create a Solar Technology Application Resource Center at Chinhoyi University of Technology. This center will help with solar energy research and development across the country.

Energy Minister July Moyo believes the future has arrived because of available technology. He said they want to partner with universities on solar energy projects. These partnerships will cover research, training, and manufacturing possibilities. The country aims to use its lithium resources for battery production.

Moyo emphasized that renewable energy investments should focus on key economic sectors like agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. He called for the nation to embrace clean energy instead of using firewood. He said clean cooking would free women from dealing with smoky wet wood during rainy seasons.

The minister encouraged property owners who generate solar power to participate in net metering. This system lets people sell extra electricity to the national grid for credit. Users only pay for the difference between what they use and supply, creating an efficient two-way energy system.
