Zimbabwe to roll out internet to all 2 400 wards by 2030

Zimbabwe's government has green-lit an ambitious nationwide internet connectivity project designed to transform digital access across the country. The Presidential Internet Scheme promises to blanket all 2,400 administrative wards with high-speed broadband, leveraging cutting-edge satellite and fiber optic technologies.

Information Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere explained the comprehensive plan will reach deeply into Zimbabwe's most remote regions. Schools, police stations, health centers, traditional homesteads, agriculture offices, courts, and community centers will all receive advanced internet infrastructure. The initiative targets communities currently left out of digital networks, bridging significant technological gaps that have historically isolated rural populations.

Advanced Low Earth Orbit satellite systems and fiber optic networks will power the connectivity expansion. The project aligns with Zimbabwe's National Development Strategy 1, focusing on building a robust digital economy. Government strategists recognize internet access as a critical tool for social and economic development, enabling educational opportunities, improved communication, and enhanced service delivery across the nation.

Launching in June 2025, the Presidential Internet Scheme will continue through 2030. Planners have built flexibility into the program, acknowledging the rapid pace of technological change. Regular reviews will ensure the project remains responsive to emerging digital technologies and evolving national needs. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates Zimbabwe's commitment to technological advancement and bridging digital divides that have historically limited rural communities' access to information and opportunities.
